We already know that The Witcher: Blood Origin will serve as a prequel to The Witcher and since it takes place several centuries before Geralt of Rivia’s story, there might not be a lot of connections between the two. However, Declan de Barra confirms that the new show will shed light on one of the biggest mysteries on the Continent. While speaking to Netflix, de Barra speaks about the importance of monoliths in The Witcher. In fact, the idea that Princess Ciri damaged one in the second season was a huge deal for everyone. But why was it such a big deal? The creator states that we will learn the truth in Blood Origin.

“We learn the origin of the monoliths here,” de Barra said. “Who first made these monoliths? Why? And then we kind of understand how they became so important in the world of The Witcher later and the power that was bestowed upon them and how that came about. They’re the catalyst for a lot of what goes wrong in this world.” It’s an awesome tease at things to look forward to in The Witcher: Blood Origin. With that in mind, we could finally learn why it was so important that Ciri was capable of destroying a monolith.

The Witcher: Blood Origin is set 1,200 years before the events of the original show and will depict the creation of the first Witcher. The new series will star Michelle Yeoh, Sophia Brown, Laurence O’Fuarain, and Minnie Driver. Blood Origin premieres on Netflix on December 25, 2022.
