While the upcoming season is technically a new installment of Picard, it will also be vastly different from the first two seasons to the point that the series could have been called “Star Trek Legacy” according to showrunner Terry Matalas in a recent interview with Den of Geek. “In my mind, I would’ve called it Star Trek Legacy,” he said. “I mean, it is truly a Picard story. He is the focus. But the spirit of it is different than seasons one and two, just because of what it is.” Some fans have also been wondering whether the upcoming season will also have references to Voyager and Deep Space Nine, considering that they were also set around the same time as The Next Generation and Seven of Nine and Worf are part of the main characters of the new season. Fortunately, Matalas confirmed that it is indeed going to be the case.
“I think that it’s important to Deep Space Nine fans to feel seen,” the showrunner noted. “It’s a continuation of Voyager too, of course, with Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) in our show. If you’re going to be in this time period, there’s such a rich opportunity to honor what came before.” Now that the upcoming season is confirmed to have references to Voyager and Deep Space Nine, it does pose a question if it opens up to the possibility that the other characters from the two shows will also show up during the season. Obviously, Matalas isn’t revealing anything about it, but his comments do suggest that there is a likelihood that it could happen. Either way, this should add to the excitement that fans have about the new season, and let’s just wait and see what kind of references will they make on the two shows.
