However, the successful relationship between the two studios has a naysayer in the name of Avi Arad, who produced Sony’s Spider-Man films and other Marvel projects as well as the former chairman and CEO of Marvel Studios, according to the book With Great Power by Sean O’Connell (via The Direct). Despite getting an executive producer credit in the MCU’s Spider-Man films, Arad is actually against Sony and Marvel’s collaboration and he claimed that the deal was only done for financial reasons and described their relationship as a “terrible” choice. “They did it for money. Terrible… Like giving your kids away for adoption, just because you’re not sure what to do with them,” he said. Meanwhile, Amy Pascal, who co-produced the Spider-Man MCU films with Kevin Feige, contended that they made the right choice on the deal and expressed that she is “very proud” that they were able to do considering how unique it is in the entertainment business.
“Here’s the thing that I want to emphasize because I think this is really important, and I don’t know if it will ever happen again in the history of the movie business. You had three studios that came together to have these movies get made. And no studio likes to share anything with anyone, let alone three studios,” she said. “In the end… I think we felt like we needed more characters, and we needed more challenges for Peter [Parker]. Kevin is a genius, and I wanted to work with him. And it just felt like we needed a different way to tell the story because I thought we were starting to repeat ourselves. You don’t want to repeat yourself. And putting Peter in a world where there are other superheroes opened up a whole new world for us.” The producer concluded, “[We] realized that what was right for the character meant you might have to give up a little to get something better… And I’m very proud of that.” Based on the fan and audience responses, we can safely say that the collaboration between the two studios is a huge success despite the objection from Arad. Not only they were box office hits, but they also delivered what fans have been waiting for ever since the MCU was established.
