Scream 6 stars Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega have been sharing a fair bit of news about the upcoming slasher sequel recently. Barrera offered some insight as to how the film will play out in its New York City setting, while Ortega said that the film will be “action-heavy” and “gore-heavy”.

Now, Ortega, who plays Tara Carpenter in Scream (2022) and next year’s follow-up, has teased that the film will honor one of the franchise’s earlier sequels in a pretty major way. In a red carpet interview at the Critics Choice Celebration of Latino Cinema & Television Award, Ortega said the following:

“Scream 6 I’m so so excited about because there’s a lot of good chase sequences. Kind of reminiscent of in Scream 2, there’s a chase between Gale and Ghostface through the lab. I feel like we have a lot of stuff like that this time around.”

Ortega is of course referring to the sequence in Scream 2 (1997) in which Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) is being hunted throughout recording rooms and corridors by the Ghostface killer. Cox will be reprising her role in the upcoming film, but for the first time without her two Scream co-stars.

Neve Campbell, who plays Sidney Prescott in the first five Scream movies, bowed out from the project earlier this year following a salary dispute with the studio.

And David Arquette, who plays Dewey Riley in those same five films - Scream (1996), Scream 2, Scream 3 (2000), Scream 4 (2011), and this year’s Scream (2022) - won’t be returning because his character is killed off in the latest sequel.

Scream 6 stars Jenna Ortega (Tara Carpenter), Melissa Barrera (Sam Carpenter), Courteney Cox (Gale Weathers), Hayden Panettiere (Kirby Reed), Jasmin Savoy Brown (Mindy Meeks), and Mason Gooding (Chad Meeks).

Newcomers are Dermot Mulroney, Henry Czerny, Tony Revolori, Jack Champion, Devyn Nekoda, Liana Liberato, Josh Segarra, and Samara Weaving in undisclosed roles.

A brief synopsis for the upcoming sequel is as follows:

“[Scream 6] continues with the four survivors of the Ghostface killings as they leave Woodsboro behind and start a fresh chapter.”

Scream 6 will be released in theaters on March 10, 2023.
