“I think 2023 has the most ambitious design for a premier set I’ve ever done,” Rosewater said on his Blogatog on Sunday, when a fan asked if he can share any information about any of the Magic: The Gathering premier sets coming in 2023. When asked what his previous most ambitious Magic: The Gathering set, Rosewater said that it’s 2019’s War of the Spark, a set which heavily featured Planeswalker cards. Rosewater later explained that War of the Spark was “the most recent design where I felt I pushed boundaries, not the most boundary pushing set of all time”. On Aug. 1, he said that the “most boundary pushing set” is 2007’s Future Sight, a set that featured “futureshifted” cards. Wizards of the Coast hasn’t revealed any details about the upcoming Magic: The Gathering sets of 2023, but they’re expected to continue a storyline that begins with Dominaria Reunited, and it’ll likely involved the return of Phyrexians, creatures from Phyrexia that are made through artifice and organ rearrangement. The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-Earth set crossover set is also set to release next year, so expect a lot of exciting new MTG cards in 2023. Dominaria United is set to release on Sept. 9.
