A Japanese fan of the show on Twitter shared some screenshots from the show, and these images show what seem to be references to the Keanu Reeves-led action flick. For one, there’s the stack of Blu-Rays that Chisato routinely watches, and among them is what seems to be a John Wick cover. Aside from this, the tweet also shows Chisato using her gun at an angle like how John uses his gun in several gunfights in the movie series. While these Easter eggs are blink-and-you’ll-miss-it inclusions, it’s still nice to see a TV anime feature a reference to one of the most critically acclaimed action movie series in the last couple of years. Lycoris Recoil (also called LycoReco by fans) is an original anime series by A-1 Pictures. It’s directed by Shingo Adachi and written by Asaura, and it stars Chika Anzai as Chisato Nishikigi and Shion Wakayama as Takina Inoue. The series is set in an alternate version of Japan where an all-female group of spies and assassins called “Lycoris” is tasked with taking down criminals and terrorists, all while sweeping their illegal activities under the rug. Takina is a Lycoris agent who is demoted after disobeying orders. She is transferred to the LycoReco café, an undercover agency branch, and is assigned to work under Chisato. While Takina is a serious and stoic agent, Chisato is a more carefree girl, yet still incredibly capable, so much so that she’s considered to be one of the best that the agency has to offer. New episodes of LycoReco are released every week on Crunchyroll.
