A few months ago, Scream 6 wrapped filming in Montreal, which will double for New York City. The Big Apple will be a fresh change for a franchise typically rooted in the sleepy town of Woodsboro, but it sounds like it will also allow for more action. And apparently a lot more gore too, according to one of its stars.
Recently, Melissa Barrera, who plays Sam Carpenter in Scream (2022) and is reprising her role in next year’s sequel, teased that there will be plenty of edge-of-your-seat thrills in the upcoming film, with scenes where Ghostface is pursuing his victims through crowds in places like Times Square.
And now, in an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Jenna Ortega, who plays Sam’s sister Tara Carpenter in Scream (2022) and the upcoming sequel, talked about how viewers will be distracted by Neve Campbell’s absence in the film, as it will be a lot more action-packed and violent than previous entries.
Here’s what she said:
“I feel like I can’t really speak too much on that just because it’s not necessarily my character, but I will say there’s so much going on in this next one, that it’s so action-heavy and so gore-heavy that I think you’re gonna be distracted almost.”
She also added that there will be references to the character of Sidney Prescott, saying:
“But it’s very clear, like, there’s references to Sidney, of course. You know, it’s nice because there’s still a protectiveness in the script and that’s something that the actors had naturally over her because obviously we respect her and we want the best for her. She’s missed and thought of.”
Earlier this year, Neve Campbell exited the project over a salary dispute. To date, she has appeared in Scream (1996), Scream 2 (1997), Scream 3 (2000), Scream 4 (2011), and this year’s Scream (2022).
Jenna Ortega will be reprising her role as Tara Carpenter in next year’s sequel, returning with Courteney Cox (Gale Weathers), Hayden Panettiere (Kirby Reed), Melissa Barrera (Sam Carpenter), Jasmin Savoy Brown (Mindy Meeks), and Mason Gooding (Chad Meeks).
Newcomers are Dermot Mulroney, Henry Czerny, Tony Revolori, Jack Champion, Devyn Nekoda, Liana Liberato, Josh Segarra, and Samara Weaving in undisclosed roles.
A brief synopsis for the upcoming sequel is as follows:
“[Scream 6] continues with the four survivors of the Ghostface killings as they leave Woodsboro behind and start a fresh chapter.”
Scream 6 will be released in theaters on March 10, 2023.
