Check out the epic new trailer for Avatar 2: The Way of Water below: “This family is our fortress”, Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) tells his wife and their two children in the epic trailer. But now that he’s no longer alone, just how much of a role will Jake Sully have this time around? Let’s find out… So, from the trailer alone we know that Jake Sully - who was transformed into a Na’vi at the end of the original Avatar (2009) - is back for Avatar: The Way of Water, and this time he has a family with Na’vi Neytiri (Zoe Saldana). That family comes in the form of an adopted human son and an adopted Na’vi daughter, and with megastar Sigourney Weaver playing the latter, it’s likely that the film will spend a great deal of time with these new characters. But whether or not Jake Sully is the main character remains to be seen. After all, the film is bursting with cast members new and old. Although it wouldn’t make sense for the sequel to shift its focus onto another main protagonist. As such, it’s reasonable to expect that Jake Sully will once again be the anchor of the film, except this time the focus will undoubtedly be on both him and his new family as they face a new threat. Even the official synopsis confirms this. As per 20th Century Studios, the official synopsis for Avatar: The Way of Water is: Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, Avatar: The Way of Water begins to tell the story of the Sully family, the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure. We also know that Sam Worthington is signed on to appear in all five Avatar movies (yes, there will be five Avatar movies - that we know of!). So it’s fair to say that his character won’t be going anywhere in a hurry. However, with that said, Sigourney Weaver and Stephen Lang, whose characters were both killed off in Avatar, will be returning. As such, it’s possible that Jake Sully could be killed off in Avatar: The Way of Water, and re-appear in a future film in another form entirely (although this could become quite gimmick-y after a while). Avatar: The Way of Water stars Sam Worthington (Jake Sully), Zoe Saldana (Neytiri), CCH Pounder (Mo’at), Giovanni Ribisi (Parker Selfridge), Joel David Moore (Dr. Norm Spellman), Dileep Rao (Dr. Max Patel), Matt Gerald (Corporal Lyle Wainfleet), Sigourney Weaver, and Stephen Lang. Newcomers to the Na’vi are Cliff Curtis (Tonowari), Jamie Flatters (Neteyam), Jeremy Irwin (Young Neteyam), Britain Dalton (Lo’ak), Chloe Coleman (Young Lo’ak), Trinity Bliss (Tuktirey), Bailey Bass (Tsireya), Filip Geljo (Aonung), Duane Evans Jr. (Rotxo), and Kate Winslet (Ronal). Newcomers to the human cast are Jack Champion (Javier “Spider” Socorro), Edie Falco (General Ardmore), Michelle Yeoh (Dr. Karina Mogue), Brendan Cowell (Captain Mick Scoresby), Jemaine Clement (Dr. Ian Garvin), Oona Chaplin (Varang), and Vin Diesel and CJ Jones in undisclosed roles. Avatar 2: The Way of Water is scheduled for release in theaters on December 16. It will be released exclusively in theaters, as well as in the following formats - Dolby Cinema, IMAX, and IMAX 3D formats. Avatar 3 will release on December 20, 2024. Avatar 4 will follow on December 18, 2026, and Avatar 5 on December 22, 2028, respectively.
