Is the DanMachi Anime Based on a Light Novel or Manga?
DanMachi, or Is it Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon, is based on a long-running light novel series by Fujino Ōmori. There is also a manga adaptation. The first DanMachi novel was published in 2013 after it won a writing competition with a major publisher in Japan (GA Bunko). The series has gone on to publish 17 volumes, of which 11 have been published in the first three DanMachi seasons. Due to its success, DanMachi has received several adaptations, including manga. There are three different manga adaptations, but the main one follows the events of the light novel and is also produced by Fujino Ōmori, with illustrations by Kunieda. In order of source, the light novel came first, followed by the manga and then by the anime.
Is the DanMachi Light Novel Finished?
Currently, the DanMachi light novel series is ongoing. Since 2013, 17 light novel volumes have been published. 16 of these have been published in English, with the 17th released in August 2022. There is no indication that DanMachi’s light novel series will end anytime soon. While releases of the novel have slowed since the start of the series, the story’s conclusion still feels a long way off, so there should be more light novels to come yet.
Is the DanMachi Manga Finished or Ongoing?
Like the light novel series, the DanMachi manga is currently ongoing. The DanMachi manga series was launched in 2013, around half a year after the first novel was published. 13 volumes have been published so far, with the latest published in December last year. The manga follows the same storyline as the light novel and anime, and is behind both of those adaptations in terms of its progress, currently covering events in season 2 of the anime. It’s not guaranteed that the manga will continue and eventually catch up with other adaptations. The manga’s status depends largely on how many copies are sold, and there are examples of manga adaptations that have been dropped due to low uptake previously.
