According to Deadline, Sweeney has been tapped to star in Sony Pictures’ new film adaptation of Barbarella as well as serve as one of the executive producers. The project is still in early development as there is no director or writer attached at the moment. Barbarella was first adapted as a film back in 1968 which starred Jane Fonda, who became iconic in that role. It is based on the French comic series of the same name by Jean-Claude Forest.
The story is centered on the titular character, who is an astronaut from the 41st century, and sets out to find and stop the evil scientist Durand Durand, whose Positronic Ray threatens to bring evil back into the galaxy. With Sweeney doing Madame Web for Sony, it looks like she is becoming one of the studio’s favorite actresses and this is certainly an interesting project for her to tackle. It’s too early to tell at this point whether she will be able to successfully play the role and will be as iconic as Fonda in addition to introducing the character to a new generation. Considering that the project is still in early development, it might take a while before we hear any more updates regarding this. Nevertheless, this is something that we can look forward to considering the iconic status of the IP and Sweeney’s rising stardom.
