What is Black Summoner All About?
When Kelvin wakes up alone in an unknown place, he doesn’t expect that of all things, a floating, talking menu would be the one to explain his current situation. Menu-san, as Kelvin refers to the floating object, explains that after a god accidentally killed him, he was given a second chance at life in this fantasy world he now finds himself in. Menu-san also reveals that it was Kelvin’s former self that made the choice to trade away his memories for high starting skills. Though at the moment his HP and Magic Power are only at minimum levels, the past Kelvin had also chosen great power-up benefits. Menu-san introduces herself as Melfina, the Goddess of Reincarnation herself who brought Kelvin into this new world. Apparently, he had fallen in love with her and had asked her to be his follower. She says she took the offer as she needed a break from her “boring” job. As a Summoner, Kelvin could ideally summon Melfina into existence, but with his current MP, it would impossible. They would have to settle for telepathic interactions for now. Melfina guides Kelvin in this new world, from signing up for a guild, to forming a pact with a monster. If this relationship continues, the day he’ll get to see the beautiful goddess might not be too far ahead. Episode 1 laid out the basics of Black Summoner. Kelvin weakened a blue slime and then formed a pact with it so it becomes another follower of his. He names the slime, now with eyes and a cute smile, Clotho. We were also given brief glimpses of characters whom Kelvin may end up becoming friends or enemies with, possibly including the female elf that Kelvin saw in a cage. Because of its comfortable pace, awesome fantasy music, pretty art, and a likeable MC, viewers found more good than bad in Black Summoner—proof that even with all isekai elements present, good writing can make even the most familiar plot enjoyable. Black Summoner, also known by its Japanese title, Kuro no Shoukanshi, is based on the highly popular light novel of the same name by Doufu Mayoi. It’s easy to see why it has and is still doing well at 17 volumes and counting.
